Vocational Training
Ida Rieu lays great emphasis in helping a “Special Person” become a useful member of the society and trains them to be self-supporting in their future life. It believes in imparting such skills that can help them become an earning member of the family. A number of our ex-students are successfully pursuing their careers in the above fields after having been trained from Ida Rieu.
It therefore provides “Vocational Training” in the following fields:-
Computer Training
For the last fourteen years we have been successfully running our computer training laboratory and we can rightly claim to be the pioneer in introducing computer training not only to the deaf but to the blind children as well. We are the first institution having specially designed computers and Braille Printer for blind students. Besides imparting computer training to all our blind and deaf students we have been offering computer science as an optional subject to our students from Matriculation to Degree level.
Painting and Handicraft
Tailoring and Embrodiery
In order to rehabilitate the deaf children the Association has established a tailoring and embroidery section where they are receiving training in sewing, cutting, embroidery, thread works, zordozi and karchobi etc.
We are also imparting this training to those deaf adults who for reasons were unable to recieve academic education in their childhood. These adult deaf students after receiving these trainings are fully proficient and are easily engaged by some of the tailoring institutions of the City.
Cane Work
Book Binding
It is notable that since the time of inception of this Book Binding Cell, the training instructor are always our ex-deaf students who have been fully trained and have been employed by the Association to impart this training to other deaf students. Presently there are two deaf students whose performance is excellent particularly in 'Ajrak Book Binding' which is in great demand. The Association is sincerely thankful to the Inner Wheel Club of Karachi who are assisting us since a very long time regularly sponsoring this very useful project.
Woodwork (Joinery)
With a view to develop natural capabilities of those deaf children who are deprived of having academic qualification for some unavoidable reasons, are provided this vocational training to make them self supporting and self reliant. After receiving this training they easily get job opportunities.
Clay Works(Ceramics)
In order to develop natural capabilities amongst the handicapped children, this project was initiated with the financial assistance of the British Women's Association and Pakistan Canada Small Project Office. It is very heartening to note that apart from deaf students, even blind students are actively participating in these classes, which are held twice a week.
Music
Music is not only a source of recreation but is also proving to be a source of earning a livelihood for our special children. We impart training in vocal and instrumental music and have got a full fledged 'School Band'. Some of our ex-students have turned into professional instructors and musicians. our blind students have been participating in the various musical shows and contests and have also being performing on Radio and Television Channels and have won many prizes.
